Going to see Eliot Lipp at The Parish followed by Prince Klassen at Beauty Bar tonight.

Go HARD

HARD Summer in LA is approximately a week away (08.08.09) and tickets are still on sale for $70. If I had monies lying around and nothing to do, I would totes go.

And if you're gonna be in the NYC area around the beginning of October, check out HARD NYC (10.10.09). The lineup isn't as good but still worth seeing.

Awesome.

The Bloody Beetroots and The Cool Kids. What could be better.

Awesome (ft. The Cool Kids)

Master Ladder Theory.

This website is a real trip down memory lane. Sophomore year of high school someone showed this to me and all the mysteries of dating and relationships were instantly revealed.

See Mystery Lights

I'm wondering how I haven't posted about this before now. It's not new news, but I'm still freakin' excited. YACHT's new album, See Mystery Lights, was just released two days ago on DFA. I Believe in You, Your Magic Is Real (2007) is still my fav album though.

Below is the video for "Psychic City (Voodoo City)," the first song off the album.

Cigarettes & Glam

Concert Reviews

What's the point of these? If you really liked a band, you would see them regardless of any review, good or bad. So why waste time reading reviews by pretentious industry pricks/music snobs when you could be pre-partying? And concerts all boil down to the following five things anyway:

1. How obnoxious the crowd is (ranging from mildly obnoxious to extremely, excruciatingly obnoxious. this is where people decide to take their shirts off and rub their sweaty naked bodies on you).
2. The venue. Indoors vs. outdoors, small vs. big, actual bathrooms vs. ghetto port-a-potties, etc.
3. Whether or not the band has "stage presence." Obviously they can play the music...they wrote the fucking songs. But do they just stand there or do they really get into it and "rock out with their cock out."
4. Sound quality. Sometimes you can't even hear the singer singing. But sometimes they're not really even singing words (Crystal Castles). In this case, this is not as important to the show's overall enjoyability.
5. Something the band does that's out of the ordinary but not too out of the ordinary. For instance, a lot of bands cover (or try to incorporate in another way) a popular, mainstream song. (i.e., Coldplay doing an acoustic version of Billy Jean, Lykke Li putting her own twist on Lil' Wayne, or Santigold dancin' to Soulja Boy). This is usually the most talked about portion of any show.

Of course, all of this is tempered by how much alcohol you (the concert-goer) have consumed. If it is copious amounts that puts you within blackout range, then all of the above can be disregarded because alcohol=guaranteed fun.

So, concert reviews=pointless. Just go and get it crunk.

Masked Love.

electro-disco-afro-rock-funk

In Flagranti is probably my fav dj duo. Sasha Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor's mixes can best be described as "dirty disco." And danceability = VERY HIGH. You also have to appreciate the fact that most of their cover art features naked ladies (love me some naked ladies).

Here are some of my top tracks:
Business Acumen
Louvre For Yo
Brash & Vulgar
Brush My Beat
I Chatted Up The Nympho Secretary (Part I)

RIP Music Mags

I remember last month Paste started the "Campaign to Save Paste," blaming poor magazine sales on the recession. But apparently they're not the only ones.

Read about the three biggest reasons music magazines are dying.

Matt & Kim

Yea Yeah, they're in love.

Cardboard Love.

Anything sounds better/is more thoughtful when written out on a piece of cardboard. Visit Cardboard Love in a Digital World for more ideas for pick up lines/cute notes to leave your bf/gf.

Lemonade.

drink.it.up.yall. a nice, cool glass of music.

Lemonade - Big Weekend (Delorean Remix)
Faunts - Feel.Love.Thinking.Of (Lemonade Remix)

Melty.

This is what it feels like to live in Texas in the summertime. Even ice cream can't save you.

Braid

Sad that I was born of fobby parents who did not (could not) teach me American ways. This unfortunately includes hair braiding. Just never learned how and was always too ashamed to ask the other girls at sleepovers to teach me. Now I can never truly be "boho" or an "American."

Heartbreaker

I digg - piano + synths yall. I'm loving how cute (and sad - the ending at least. it's all those damn pinatas. really kills the mood) the music video is.

Here is something to think about. Is the main guy in the video better than his hoodlum friends cause he's not into doing "stupid shit" and is really just looking for a nice alt chick or...is he worse because he just wants to get "some." Anyways, no time for chitchat. Let's just get to the point and make out.

Take on Me (Again)

I had no idea these guys were still together. And it's just weird to think that they're still making music. When I hear "a-ha," the tune for "Take on Me" immediately pops into my head and as well as the music video with the animated drawing and two angry doods with construction hard hats holding wrenches...that's a difficult brand image to overcome. Anyways, apparently their new album, Foot of the Mountain, is out today. Maybe they'll get a lot of the 30-somethings who are nostalgic for the 80s to buy their album. Even I get a little nostalgic for the 80s sometimes (still wish I had been a tween/teen in the 80s. I would've rocked the teased hair and spandex so hard). Below is the title track if you're curious enough to have a listen.

at least they still have their looks

I'm Bossy.

Took this today. The novelty license plate is that much more meaningful because the car is a Porsche.

Mainstreaming

Sometimes I listen to the radio when driving around aimlessly and sometimes it happens to be on KISS FM. Heard this song the other day and it just spoke to my soul. Came home and watched the vid for the remix (with Gucci Mane) on YouTube. I know exactly how Mariah Carey feels cause I had/have so many stalkers ya know.

The vid also features Mariah Carey dressed up as a man/the stalker (and not a very attractive one). Could be interpreted that MC is obsessed with herself (truth). But apparently the song might be directed at Eminem, who claimed that he had a six-month relationship with MC (which she vehemently denies). Ohhh Hollywood dramaz.

Ode to Cigarettes

If I see nuns and small children smoking, of course I'm gonna want to do it too. Attractive people and supermodels smoking only moderately influences me to "light up."

Wanderlust

There are so many music fests out there these days that it seems like if you go to one, you've been to them all. They're all normally 2-3 days in huge-ass empty field with several different stages set up...and more or less the same bands roll through. So I guess concert promoters decided that it was time to do something different. This year kicks off the first year of the Wanderlust Festival, a fusion of live music and yoga. Not only do they have bands, but also yogis (teehee). Also, it's in Lake Tahoe. Sounds like the perf vacay to me. Maybe I'll hit it up next year. I hear yoga calms the spirit (I need it).

2009 lineup includes:
Spoon
Andrew Bird
Jenny Lewis
Girl Talk
Mates of State
Broken Social Scene
I need one of these.

24.7.09

Fred Falke

Quoting Carles on www.asianmandan.com, "FALKE RULES." Truth. Love Carles, love Falke. Here are some of my fav Fred Falke remixes.

The Gossip - Heavy Cross (Fred Falke Remix)
Miami Horror - Make You Mine (Fred Falke Remix)
Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (Fred Falke Remix)
The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix)

Also, I don't know how I feel about Thom Yorke and Bon Iver contributing to the new Twilight movie's soundtrack. And apparently they're not the only ones. According to NME, "the Radiohead frontman was among a number of artists who had expressed an interested in contributing to the score for the vampire film." Kinda feel like they're selling out. And I don't know if a good soundtrack is enough to overpower a horrendously written script. C'mon, "hold on tight spidermonkey?" Who comes up with this stuff, srsly.

Bon Iver and Thom Yorke (they sorta look like the same person - bearded ging)

Todd P Goes to Austin

This makes me want to:
1. Be a groupie.
2. Stay in Austin forever.

I LOVE MEN

Saw Men at Beauty Bar last night. I've never seen so many lesbians in one place. There were so many. That should have been expected since the lead singer/keyboardist is JD Samson. But the show was AH-MAYZING. Dance party to the max. AND I got a pic with JD herself...love her even more now that I've seen her a second time.

This dropped about a month ago but has only now reached my asian ears. Terry Urban and Gold Coin put together the ultimate mashup mixtape - Santigold vs. Southern Hip-Hop. The album cover is really enough to make you take a listen if you haven't already.

motivated motivation

Feeling very blasé about everything. Would like to just lay around and watch reruns of 16 and Pregnant all day (and maybe a show or two of To Catch a Predator to mix things up a bit). However, I am taking the GMAT in t-minus 30 days (eff). So I need to kick it into high gear and tie myself down to the desk. Therefore, I have resolved to limit my social outings. Not drastically of course. Still need to see as many shows as possible, but pretty much everything else is out. Happy hours and West 6th are two exceptions...but that's it. Seriously.

Motivation playlist:
Geraldine - Glasvegas
Hide Me - The Golden Filter
Never Content (Friends Tropic Thunder Edit) - Air France

Headdress. The Newest Accessory

I feel like this might become the new "trend." I mean, if Bat for Lashes does it then it must be cool, right?

P.S. - still dislike Bat for Lashes. Don't care what Mercury, Pitchfork or anyone says I still think she's boring.

2009 Mercury Shortlist

Today the shortlist is out:

Florence and the Machine – 'Lungs'
Kasabian – 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum'
Bat for Lashes – 'Two Suns'
La Roux – 'La Roux'
Glasvegas – 'Glasvegas'
Speech Debelle – 'Speech Therapy'
Friendly Fires – 'Friendly Fires'
The Horrors – 'Primary Colours'
Lisa Hannigan – 'Sea Sew'
The Invisible – 'The Invisible'
Led Bib – 'Sensible Shoes'
Sweet Billy Pilgrim – 'Twice Born Men'

I'm pulling for La Roux. Love Ellie Jackson so hard.

And oh yeah, it's free pastry day at Starbucks.
